Han River Bridge is the first swing bridge in Vietnam, a project of great significance to Da Nang city. The bridge began construction on September 2, 1998 and was officially inaugurated on March 29, 2000.

The construction of the bridge is the result of joint efforts from the government and people of Da Nang. A significant part of which was contributed by the city’s people, demonstrating their consensus and determination. At the foot of the bridge, there is a list of individuals and groups who contributed to the construction of this project.

Before the Han River Bridge, traveling between the two banks of the Han River was difficult, especially at night. The birth of the bridge not only solved the traffic problem but also opened a new development stage for Da Nang city, connecting the central area with the east coast. This has created a premise for the development of tourism and economy of the city.

Han River Bridge has a total length of 487.7 meters and a width of 12.9 meters, including 11 spans, each span is about 33 meters long. The bridge is designed with 2 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 lanes for pedestrians and bicycles. The structure of the bridge is made of very sturdy reinforced concrete, combined with 2 cable-stayed spans with a total length of 122.7 meters, the main bridge girder and tower are made of steel, the bridge deck is made of reinforced concrete.

The most special and attractive feature of the bridge is its ability to rotate 90 degrees around its axis. At certain times of the night, the middle part of the bridge will rotate to open the way for large ships to pass. The bridge can rotate because the main axis can move at an angle of 90 degrees, using a high-power motor and pulled by a cable. The rotation process takes about 15-20 minutes to rotate to an angle of 90 degrees and then 15 minutes to return to the original position. This is a unique sight, attracting the attention of many tourists and locals.

The highlight of visiting Han River Bridge is witnessing the bridge swing. About 15 minutes before the bridge swings, all vehicles on the bridge will stop to ensure safety. The bridge swing schedule has been adjusted to serve visitors:

  • From Monday to Friday: The bridge usually swings around 1am. Depending on the number of boats, the bridge may return to its original position at 2am or 4am
  • Saturday and Sunday: To serve visitors, the bridge swings earlier, usually around 11pm and returns to its original position after about 15-20 minutes
